Day #6 at the 2016 Lakeside World Championships saw 4 Harlequin Icons in action – Geert De Vos, Trina Gulliver MBE, Lorraine Winstanley and Zoe Jones.
First up in the second game of the afternoon session was Zoe Jones, who faced Ann-Louise Peters of Denmark. Zoe took confidence from defeating New Zealand’s Tina Osborne in a tough first round tie, while Ann-Louise Peters had caused a shock by beating Harlequin’s Fallon Sherrock on the opening round. Unfortunately for Zoe she lost out 2-0, but at the age of 23 we know the England star will be back to grace the famous Lakeside stage many times over the coming years, and will look to return next year having gained more experience from her second appearance at the competition.
The last game of the afternoon session was a game of Lakeside champions, as Harlequin’s 9-time World Champion Trina Gulliver MBE took on two-time Lakeside winner and former Harlequin Icon, Lisa Ashton. Throughout the tournament Lisa has been the favourite with pundits and favourites alike, but it was Trina who was in flying form on the day, getting a 2-1 victory to progress to the Semi Finals. We are delighted for Trina and look forward to supporting her on Day #7 at Lakeside as she faces Holland’s Aileen de Graaf.
Harlequin Icon Lorraine Winstanley took to the stage in the evening session live on BT Sport, facing Deta Hedman. Lorraine had started the competition in fine form, defeating Rachel Brooks 2-0, but Deta took the lead, before winning the second set to seal a 2-0 victory. Undoubtedly Lorraine will be disappointed to exit the competition but her progress to the Quarter Finals caps off a successful year, and we look forward to supporting Lorraine again throughout 2016.
The headline game of the evening saw Harlequin Teamwear’s 2015 BDO World Trophy Champion, Geert De Vos take to the stage against Scott Waites. It was a dream start, as Geert won 3 straight sets, including a second set that was won by hitting 3-bull finishes. Disappointingly for our Belgium Star, Waites battled back, and then went on to win the game 4-3. Geert will look to put this defeat behind him, and we know he will have a fantastic 2016 as one of the highest scoring players on the BDO circuit, which was illustrated by his huge 113.86 average in his third game at the 2015 PDC Grand Slam of Darts.
Keep up to date with all the action from our Harlequin Icons progress at the Lakeside World Championships:
